Hands on Stanzas Summer Fling

This summer Hands on Stanzas, The Poetry Center's literacy through poetry program, was proud to partner with Alternatives, Inc. to bring poetry programming to seven summer camps sponsored by the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago.

Alternatives, Inc. is northeast Chicago's largest agency dedicated to at-risk youth and their families. The not-for profit agency's goal is to facilitate personal development, strengthen family relationships, and enhance the community's well being.

Hands on Stanzas Poets in Residence Ryan Downey, Matthias Regan and Marissa Spalding visited camps located at Chicago Elementary School locations for six weeks:
  • Libby Elementary
  • Learn Elementary Charter School
  • Murray Elementary Language Academy
  • Richard J. Oglesby Elementary
  • Morton Elementary Career Academy
  • Whistler Elementary
  • YMCA, Ryerson Branch

Following is a selection of poems created by students who participated in the summer program. We took as our source of inspiration the YMCA themes of Respect, Honesty, Caring and Responsibility.

Untitled

Rasmieh from Murray Elementary Language Academy

I want to go back in
time and use my kindness
power to break a fight or
find a solution.

The power of kindness
is the shape of a star.

I Was
Elaine from Libby Elementary

I was dared to take it
so strong
so brave
what an astonishing look
on you, but better
on me.
but coming between
a lie and the truth
of talking. I was in a
knot
not knowing
what to do

Untitled
Ajee from LEARN Elementary Charter School

When I look at you
I picture you swing dancing
hopping and jumping
swinging and dipping
but now you're too old you can't
do it now you just sit in bed
and watch America's Got Talent
and it's funny how you wanted
to go on a date with
Doctor King
you could have
you were
the prettiest Grandma I ever
met and I think you could
do another dance if you try
I will help you but I might
not be that good

Multiplies
Anathiel from Murray Elementary Language Academy

If only I could multiply
to be there for others at once

so many people calling my name
but who do I go to first?

So many things to do and ways
to say words looking at the disappointment
on their faces because of me not
able to show up or help

if only I could multiply so
at anytime I can be there.

Spider
Pinky from Morton Elementary Career Academy

Brave arachnid
spinning with
tears as
stars with blankets
on the side

Mr. Pants
Kyree from Murray Elementary Language Academy

This person
is riding a bike
in the winter with
a ripped up winter coat
and a hat covered all over
his face. He fell on a tree
and it hurt really bad
he was crying and
bleeding it
hurt really
bad.

Untitled
Destiny from Richard J. Ogelsby Elementary

I am scared of insects NOISE they
Make!
The SIZE they
are!
I was stung by a BEE on my
Stomach! NOW I never go around
BEES!
I am scared of Spiders BECAUSE they
have too many LEGS!

Garden Row
Elaine from Libby Elementary

When I look at you
I think how
your petals
are smooth
soft
pretty looking
so many
I don't know
which one
I like: daisies
roses, bluebells
sunflowers . . .
Such astonishing
colors it
makes t he yard
look perfect
what would
I do
without you

Dog Fighting
Jalen from Libby Elementary

When I watch you fight your face
gets messed up, blood leaking from your
torn head. The blood is in your fur.
Your color of fur is brown and soft
and where the blood is leaking
the color is white and soft but
blood is dripping down and you have
scratches that are bloody and
long. And when you walk away
you look hurt and sad.

The Building
Mauriauna from Morton Elementary Language Academy

The smoke is
blowing from
the destroyingness
The windows
are broken
The house is
always broken into
little pieces of dirt

Untitled
Veronica from Learn Elementary Charter School

Poor old shadow
that floats around
silently moving
across the ground. I
feel so sad seeing and
hearing it go. Knowing that
times will let you know.
Happy so suddenly to see you
there. L down on the bed.

Goodnight my dear.

A Weird Day
Malachi from Morton Elementary Language Academy

It is
a weird day
everybody is
going mad its
so mad
the world is
coming to an
end like
it always has

Older
Erykah from Whistler Elementary

Whenever you come
I'm excited to see you.
You bring joy to the time
and space continuum.
You fill my soul and heart
with love. You taught me
so many things and valuable
sayings that have impacted my life.
Whenever you come
there's a whole other
level of respect waiting
for you. The many meals that
have lifted me and brought me
through. I thank you.
Whenever you come
I'll be here waiting
for you. Because you're
my grandfather I'll always
wait for you!

Untitled
Kenneth from Ryerson YMCA

Alleyways crosswalks
they both the same
they got similar names
Alleyways and
crosswalks
people just talk
see writing in a
crosswalk
dents in an alleyway
but they can both sway
see enemy crosswalks

Growing Up
Asya from Whistler Elementary

Growing up
I watched you prepare
to go on dates
Growing up
I saw your beauty
progress
Growing up
I watched you move
from job to job, city to city
just to make sure I always
had a birthday
and Christmas gift
Growing up
I saw you achieve your goals
Growing up
I saw you very sick
Growing up
I saw your wrinkles and
flaws
Growing up
I watched you descend
Growing up
I heard your last breath

Untitled
Makisha at Richard J. Oglesby Elementary

Alley ways make me think of people that are
homeless and don't have any family that don't
believe in those people.
Window units make me think of little kids
looking out of a window and watching the sunset
