This summer Hands on Stanzas, The Poetry Center's literacy through poetry program, was proud to partner with Alternatives, Inc. to bring poetry programming to seven summer camps sponsored by the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago.
Alternatives, Inc. is northeast Chicago's largest agency dedicated to at-risk youth and their families. The not-for profit agency's goal is to facilitate personal development, strengthen family relationships, and enhance the community's well being.
Hands on Stanzas Poets in Residence Ryan Downey, Matthias Regan and Marissa Spalding visited camps located at Chicago Elementary School locations for six weeks:
- Libby Elementary
- Learn Elementary Charter School
- Murray Elementary Language Academy
- Richard J. Oglesby Elementary
- Morton Elementary Career Academy
- Whistler Elementary
- YMCA, Ryerson Branch

So many things to do and ways to say words looking at the disappointment on their faces because of me not able to show up or help if only I could multiply so at anytime I can be there.

Dog Fighting Jalen from Libby Elementary When I watch you fight your face gets messed up, blood leaking from your torn head. The blood is in your fur. Your color of fur is brown and soft and where the blood is leaking the color is white and soft but blood is dripping down and you have scratches that are bloody and long. And when you walk away you look hurt and sad.
