Warming Up with Metaphors

Last Friday, we kicked off a short and sweet residency with 6th graders at Jordan Elementary! I talked about what students can expect over the course of our time together, experiences students have with poetry, and if they knew what a metaphor was. We watch Katy Perry’s “Firework” music video (an excellent metaphor example) before reading “Frost” by Valerie Bloom. We didn’t have time for students to write poems, but they came up with some excellent metaphors such as : My home is a crime scene,
My heart is winning a soccer game
