“Friday Freewrites! Part One”

For our final January poetry sessions at Swift Elementary School we had a fine time reading and listening to a variety of poems. We looked and listened to poems written by other students collected in a book called Kids’ Poems by Regie Routman; and we read poems and enjoyed illustrations by Yayo from I am the Book with poems selected by Lee Bennett Hopkins. Many students were eager to read their own original poems to their classmates, and so we enjoyed great sharing time. In Ms. Amato’s class, students looked over the collection of poems that are beginning to grow in their Poetry Folders. And when I came into Ms. Popovic’s classroom many students were involved in research on animals. When I told students that they could create a poem on the topic of their choice, using as few or as many lines as they desired, it was a joy to be in the midst of their creative energy! Some students wrote poems about the animals they were learning about.  Some wrote acrostic poems with Ms. Popovic.  There were so many great efforts! I’ve decided to publish eight of those poems in this post, and next week I will publish eight more, so be sure to return for Part Two!

The Letter
Anjel S.

The letter is like a card
The stamp is lovely as a
very kind heart.
Whatever the letter
says I know it is very lovely.
It’s from grandma she sent
me a rose just in that letter
and the rose it has all of
her love in it for me.

Elizabeth
Yaretzi G.

Elizabeth is nice and sweet
When I am lonely in the park
she comes to me.  When I am
sad she comes to me and says
are you okay? She’s as caring as
my mom.  When it is summer
I go to her house to play.
Her parents are so nice as
well.  Most of the time I don’t
go to her house.  She has black
hair, black eyes, black boots, a colorful
shirt, gray pants with zebras.  She’s
really funny.  I love being her
best friend!
