“The sun is super hot just like my mom’s cooking pot”

During our fifth poetry workshop for the 5th graders, we talked about space poetry a couple of weeks after watching the eclipse. We first learned all about the United States Poet Laureate Ada Limón’s collaboration with NASA to send a poem to one of Jupiter’s moons! Then we learned about odes and read her poem “In Praise of Mystery: A Poem for Europa,” in addition to watching the special animation video made for the project. After that, students wrote their own odes. Check them out below.

Grandma and me make tamales

by Cecllia G.

I love to make tamales

with my grandmother. I love green

tamales. I like red but not as much.

I like the smell of green sauce so much.

When my grandmother and me make tamales

the dough feels soft and at the same time sticky.

I like to eat tamales because

it feels hot when you eat it,

just like it sounds

and it’s a little sticky but… I love tamales.

Nirvana

by Francisco M.

Nirvana is a band I like

that plays a different type of music

called grunge it’s kind of like rock

but more metallic

the reason I like it

is because I like their lead singer

and guitarist Kurt Cobain.

Soccer Game

by Alex

I love soccer

The history

So many have changed the game

for people and me

It is a fast-paced game

Don’t take your eyes away!

You might miss a goal or a play.

Space

by Jordan

Space is the best.

In space, we never saw pests,

so many things yet to test.

Space is just great.

So many things not known.

Though if you go into a blackhole

it can break your bones.

But here on earth you have to pay loans.

The sun is super hot

just like my mom’s cooking pot.

Space is big just like the hole I dig.

In Praise of My Dad

by Sofia G.

This an an ode to my dad

He always makes me laugh

and whenever I am sad

He always cheers me up.

We always hang out with each other

We’ll go on the swings together

We’ll even go on the trampoline together

this is an ode to my dad.

The Music

by Sophia N.

I hear the music going through

my eye I can feel the mood

in the song it is so loud

and good I love music

It is like watching a video

Just not with people in it

Just you and me feel the music

in your mind

Feel it like in real life

Have fun with the music

Make it look like a play

not just a song, a play.
