Blackout Poems

During this session, we explored a new form of poetry: erasure or blackout poems! We looked at examples of different blackout poems and then read one written by another student who blacked out parts of a New York Time Article about ICE kidnapping 5 year old Liam Ramos. We discussed the ways poets can reveal the truth in their work, and blackout poems can be a tool to do so. Students then read two short story excerpts and chose their favorite to create a blackout poem from. We will continue to work on these together as some students also wanted to try blacking out books they had already been reading!
