“My name means a country”: Name Dropping

‘I celebrate and sing myself…’-Walt Whitman

Students explored names through a series of prompts which began with a reading a a girl named jack by Jaqueline Woodson, What occurs in the naming of someone or something? How does it sound when spoken? How does it feel to be announced or announce someone by their name? Who speaks the name like you do?

Lesson Note: ‘…the name a person bears through life is something [they] must carry, and it is sometimes the only thing others have to judge you by before they meet you. Your name travels ahead of you like a portent of things to come, a thing from which others make assumptions about people.’-Tim Lockwood, Writer.

a girl named aaliyah
by Aaliya S.

My mom gave me my name off of a
novel

In the novella, it was Leah and my mom
wanted my nickname to be Leah so she
just added “Aa” so it could be Aalyah.

My mom picked out my name because
the name my dad picked out, she didn’t
like

Two things I like bout my name is
that my mom picked it up and that I
could have a lot of nicknames

One thing that I hate is that a lot of
people pronounce my name and my
last name wrong.

My Name
by Jasmin R.

My name means how I express
myself.

My name comes from my
grandparents.

My parents gave me my name
because they think it sounds
beautiful.

The things I like about my name
is how people say my name when
they call me.

My name doesn’t match my personality
because everyone thinks I’m sweet and nice
but I’m actually calm and quiet almost
everyday.

My Name

My name means I’m
joyful.

My grandparents wanted
to name me as a unicorn name.

They imagined me in rainbow
colors dancing on clouds
with a happy face.

When I was born. My
father wanted to name
his girl princess.

But the women said no.

We won’t have a girl
named princess!

Then my uncle pulled up
my purple blanket back

My father mad not talking
to my mom

For no good reason
but to ask if her
parents were crazy, my mother
said.

My nicknames were
better than what my
father wanted to name
me.

A boy named Alejandro
by Alex O.

I wondered where
my name was from it was
from my Great Grandfather
with his great name.

Alejandro is like McDonald’s
it has 9 letters in its name.

I heard that Alejandro is common
but I think it’s actually super rare
because I am a lefty.

And only 12% of the population is lefties.

I have been called Alex, because my actual name
is long, like really long!

My name is Alejandro.

My Name Means Cheery
by Shareese D.

Bright and cheerful
my father said. My mother
didn’t agree with
my father. She wanted
to name me something else
and my father said that is a
name for a boy.

My father said that I was
going to be special.

I dislike my name
It is made of trees. I didn’t
feel satisfied with just
one name, so I took many.

There are 8 letters in my name
Each with a different meaning to me.

But not one matches
each word in my
personality.

I dislike how people
say and spell my name,
“Sahrese” I hate my
the nickname “Reese”, “Reese’s
Pieces.”

Cheerful Cheery. I’m not
Cheerful or Cherry.

I wished that my
name wasn’t Shareese
