‘it feels like a hug from the past”: Odes

Students read Ode To My Shoes by Francisco X. Alacron before penning their own wonderful odes!

Lesson Note: “If it were up to me, everything I love would have a poem in praise of it. I mean everything: homemade chocolate cookies, park benches, sinuous roads beside city rivers — even that clear plastic cap on a newly purchased deodorant stick that this morning I only figured out the best way to remove. Turn the dial” .-Major Jackson, Poet.

Oda a mi Sueter
by Noah D.

My seater
comfy, warm
always there
never lonely
waits for me
when I need it
Supportive no matter what
How wonderful is my sweater
My amazing sweater
My sweater…

Ode to my Crocs
by Felix M.

I love my Crocs and they make
me feel like I rock. I keep them on
the rack. Have a whole stack. I take them
everywhere. Nowhere. I just love having
these prayers. They’re my best. Not a pest.
Haters are the grossest.

Ode to My Dad’s Dark, Blue, Nice, Baggy Jeans
by Daniel P.

These dark blue,
nice,
baggy
jeans
that are from
someone’s
Dad
are legendary

They’ve stood the test of time,
They’ve withered down
but they’re still staying
strong

They’ve bared the pigments
the cold and rainy
the hot and dusty,
but they’re still staying
strong

They’ve lived so long
that the dad’s kids can wear them
but they’re still staying strong.

Ode to My Red Concert Sweater
by Harper D.

it reminds me of that time and place it was
the person I was then

It’s red like warmth
a great feeling

When I take it off
all the memories stay there
like a movie

The sweater is beautiful
not just visually but in warmth
it feels like a hug from the past

it keeps all the memories safe
stowed away
only to be remembered
in a flash

Ode to My Hoodie
by Liv H.

Oh, how my hoodie protects me
It protects me from the cold
It protects me from the wind
It protects me from the rain

The hoodie keeps me comfy
It keeps me comfy from the hard day
It keeps me comfy when I sleep
It keeps me comfy in the cold

the hoodie hangs in my closet
waiting each day to get worn
the day it gets chosen
a shield will form

Ode to My Necklace
by Ayla R.

O’ necklace
has a gold shimmer like the sun
so bright it could light up a dark room.

O’ necklace
gives me comfort
it could make an outfit or
could break one.

O’necklace
when lost
will always be found
‘Ode to my necklace.’

Ode to My Cozy Christmas Hat
by Bridid R.

Oas it waits
for me
to put it on

It smiles back
as I smile

All my hat wants
is for it to be
Christmas so
it can see everything

but till then it waits
for me
to come back
and put it on

Ode to my Comfy Beige Essentiank Hoodie
by Jobson H.

Ode to my sweater,

my sweater feels like soft clouds
praise my sweater. I’m in heaven.
Soft like a blanket, light as a feather
If the sweater was hugging me, I’d feel like in paradise.
Damn, I would chase this sweater to hell to feel good.
Ode to the warmth.
