Word Searching

Happy Winter Solstice! Carver’s students spent last week carving out some time for poetic exploration with books from my personal collection. After spending some time catching, up, students spent time drawing words from different books to create a word bank. From there, I challenged students to use at least four words from their lists to write a new poem. Check out what one of our student poets wrote below:

The Goal

by Kamaya M.

The goal
Was
To pour so much of
My
Depression into this poem
That the space above ur
Cheeks caved in
And your eyelash showered
The goal
Was
To
Hide so much of the
Exhilaration from my skin
In the margins
Like it was my body
From drainage
The goal
Was to
Rope my words around ur neck
And hang u from ur ego
The goal
The goal
This time
Was
To
Jar
Chunks of my hearts
Like
Coins
And hide them
Inb the pond
of that summer
I used the blood
To carve help into my eyes
The goal
Was
To
Infuse
The
Essences of my voice
When i hide beneath
My bed
The influences burning in my sheets
The goal
Was never to call
The goal was to boil my words to the temperature of lava
And bird feed u words of affirmation
The goal
Was to
Giggle

Until my heart stop pounding at the doors of my lips
The goal
Was to sew the blanket of life
Lively life
And motivation into the bottom batch of my skin
The goal was never to make it
The goal
Was never to be accomplish
The goal was
To
Take the
Seat of
Life
The goal was the refusal
To
Get
Up
To sit
With a hourglass shape
So sharp it
Tortured the rolls of her skin
The goal
Was simply
THE goal
The goal was
Life
But the goal was never survival
