What’s on the Menu? 2nd Grade Recipe Poems

As distance learning continues, we’ve concocted more word play by using the language of recipes to create poems that imagine things such as: how to make a friend laugh, how to bounce on a cloud, and how to be an artist.  Before whipping up their own recipe poems, Swift 2nd graders read and discussed the poem “How to Make a Friend” by Lacey Van Lear – who was a 2nd grader at Swift last year.

How to write a poem together
by Monday Morning Poets

The first thing you want to do is brainstorm together
You will need a gallon of words
You will need to think about what your poem will say
Think about it for 30 seconds before you flip it on the skillet
Pour 3 cups of imagination to make it crispy
Look around you and find something salty –
Like the ocean! to put in the pan
Take a spatula and cook the words on low heat
(so it won’t burn)
Serve it to a sheet of paper
with syrup and a drink of punctuation
Like periods, commas, and exclamation points!

Add some cinnamon sugar and butter
And half a sour apple
Stir it into a house that is tall and sits on a cloud
The house has a magical slide that makes you slide down really fast
Whisk 2 problems together
In a bowl before pouring
Into a medium-sized pan
Keep stirring until the characters learn the lesson
