Zany Zines

On Wednesday 6th graders had their 10th and final poetry session for the school year. We had a blast this spring writing poetry together. To celebrate we did a fun and artistic poetry project: zines. Zines are small, homemade magazines or booklets.  Zines are visual, and can have creative themes such as music, comics, personal stories, or poetry. They can be silly, strange, or serious, it’s a great way to get self-published. Some poets sell their zines in-person and online or showcase them at arts & crafts events.

I brought paper, markers, glue and my personal early 2000’s teen magazines that I used to read as a kid.  It was great to show students fashion trends, products, and celebrities during that decade. Mr. Barr the 6th grade teacher was generous and shared stickers, paper scraps, stencils, and old Scholastic magazines for students to use too.  Below are photos of some of the zines.  We have amazing student artists who created unique works of art.

I want to give poetry snaps of appreciation to Ashley P., Fernando S., and Luluwa Y. for performing their poetry at the Poetry Foundation last Saturday for our Spring Showcase. They did an incredible job representing Twain.

I wish 6th graders a safe and fantastic summer. I will miss you all and hope you keep writing and using your imaginations.
