Schools out for summer!!!
Another school year comes to an end, and it’s time to say goodbye to another amazing group of students. We ended our 10-week residency with an in-class open mic where everyone was able to share a poem they created over the course of our time together they were proud of. I’m always amazed by what students create, by their vibrant imaginations and their unique stories. But the most fulfilling part of working with young people, is seeing them turn into writers. Seeing how they begin to think critically, how their confidence in their instincts flourishes, how they start to trust their voices, how they start to use the tools they learn with intention…how they start to think like poets. None of that would be possible without amazing partners like Ms. Murray who I’ve had the pleasure of working with for three years now! Thank you Ms. Murray, for your unwavering commitment to your students, to their growth and development. Thank you to the kind staff at Perez who welcome me each week with a smile. And thank you to every student I had the honor of working with this year! I learn so much about being a writer by spending time with you! I hope you continue to see how important and valuable your voices, experiences and stories are. Thanks for trusting me with your words and ideas, and for being courageous enough to share them. Have a fantastic summer!
Ms. Mayda.
