“Tell ‘Em It’s Just Human Nature”

During our poetry camp at Mark Twain, Ms. Carther’s 3rd -5th graders used personification to bring life to everyday objects. We read “If Winter Were a Person” by Youth Poet, Olivia Kooker as inspiration. From there the students were able to write poems using personification and draw corresponding pictures . Check out the awesome work of Arely, Calvin, Eli and Jaime!

Crayons Had Enough Arely

Crayons we use to draw well take a look at what they have to say

The blue, black, red, yellow, green and white.

First, blue, he would say, “Stop using me for the sky.”

Black would say, “Stop using me for your outlines.”

Red would say, “Stop using me for blood and roses.”

Yellow would say, “Stop using me for the sun.”

Green would say, ‘Stop using me for the grass.”

Finally, white would say, “Please use me!”

“You have never used me. I’m so sad but you say I don’t need you.”

“You do nothing and you’ll throw it in the trash.”

Then your mom gives you black paper, he says, “Ha, I’m invincible!”

You try to draw the sky, the sun, the grass, the outlines and then you realize…

You need white.

You say sorry.

White says, “No you don’t need me.”

He leaves you, you cry because you cannot color.

You will never color again.

Moral of the story, don’t be mean and be kind.

If the lake could talk Calvin

If the lake could talk, it would say I need food not water.

I have so much of it everyday.

The lake would take everyone’s food.

The lake is so bored because he has everything he wants.

He steals people’s food.

He can take the water of other lakes.

It turns out he gives the water and food back

And donates his things.

Then he becomes friends with sea creatures and people.

Then he goes to an assembly and wins 5 awards!

When he goes home, he loves being kind and making new friends.

August Poem Eli

If August could talk, it would say, “Summer is going to end.”

And “Get ready for school!”

It would feelĀ  calm and sad.

Because it is going to end.

It would get packed up for school.

It would swim in a pool.

August would give life to seeds that died.

It would let bees fly in the sky.

It would help plants.

It would go to the baseball game.

It will give ice cream for kids to eat.

In the sun, it will fly to new places.

It will give birthdays to everyone in August.

It would help people.

It would enjoy the heat.

It would swim with the turtles.

It would make a rainbow on a bad day.

It will give fireworks to 4th of July.

It will play games in the night till the sunrise.

It will eat cold foods.

It will go see lonely people and talk to them.

It would plant the plants then school will come.

Then everyone would be sad to go to school.

But then when school ends,

Everyone is going to be happy to see August again.

The Lake Whispered to Me Jaime

I went fishing but then the lake whispered to me to be calm and quiet.

And I listened to the lake and I heard the lake’s waves.

And I was calm and quiet.

If it talks to me, I will listen to the lake.

So I started fishing calm and quiet so I can listen like

A well calm, nice and behaved kid

Now I like going to lakes and rivers so I can hear the calm waves.

And go fishing at every lake or river that I see.

And I might even stay at lakes and rivers for a whole hour

And be calm and go fishing

I might even talk or whisper to the lake or river

And I’ll bring my notebooks so I can draw pictures of the lake

Now I love lakes and rivers

So I will swim in the lakes and rivers.
