Letter to you,

Day 6 of our 8 day Poetry Camp! We learned about epistle poetry– poetry that is written in the format of a letter. We listened and read Dr. Joshua Bennett’s poem “Dear Stevie” and wrote our own epistle poetry. Students then were tasked to mail their poem to someone they wrote about or care about! We provided envelopes and stamps and learned about the art of letter writing.

Check out today’s poems!

"Good Old Fashion Loving" Georgie J.

To all the band members in Queen
I want to thank you for all the moments
for what you have helped me with

The peaceful car rides you have brought me
usually everyone singing along
or just silence that helps me calm down,
This is what happens when we listen to “Bohemian Rhapsody”

You’ve even helped understand myself better
Remind me that things really do matter
Not feeling so lost any more
I felt grounded and not spiraling away

Countless songs of yours have motivated me
Helping me do things that feel impossible
All of this I’m grateful for
Without you I question where I would be

"Music" Julian G.

Pink Pantheress is iconinc for her
music. She is my favorite artist
and just makes me have no
worry in the world.

When I listen to her it’s
like my brain just turns into
art of red and blue and plaid
with stickers everywhere

She is my favorite artist
because her music is always
calm or hype. Her music videos
are always aesthetic and have such
great art.

Her videos start off with no lyrics
and only a beat. Then she just pops off with
the flow of the beat. While the video continues,
the art and style of her are in the video. She
usually has red in her videos and red and blue
plaid which is really aesthetic.

"Blessings to my Headphones" Sofia M.

To my coffee fueled
nights
starring at that computer
with my pen on my right and my
math starring at me
my essay on my left
and my headphone through my
head

chords traveling through my brain
tasting the music
from reality to reality

my hands sore
and my eyes, dead

"Dear Charli XCX" Alejandro P.

Dear Charli XCX

The music you make can define
the word freedom better than the
dictionary,

It makes me want to lay in a
cornfield and let the cool air seep
through my skin,

It makes me want to run through
the streets of downtown and never
stop,

Your music is like medicine I take
and I take it twice to be sure

SS26 feels like a cold shower that
washes away the chains that keep you
trapped in a room.

I still remember hearing
“Girl, so confusing” 3 years ago
while I was cleaning my room.

Thank you for choosing music.

"Dear Me" Natalia HG

Sometimes when you draw, you might not
get it right, but it’s not a sign for
you to stop.
Sometimes when you’re out and wearing
something that you like don’t be afraid
don’t think you’re getting judged, you’re not.

"Rock Over Life: To My Dad" Samantha M.

As the radio turns on any song
without drums disappears like the Flash
The new music coming out of the radio will
NEVER BE GENTLE, not in a million
years

I just think to myself how were you when
you heard this song?

Anger? Sadness? Happy? Envy? Embarrassed?

Any one of those emotions don’t seem
to fit in with the music though

WAIT! I GOT IT!

Energized? The Beat, The Voice, The Drums,
The Bass; you must feel awake just
WIDE AWAKE

no emotions felt or maybe tons
of them felt

Tens and Hundreds of songs, How can
I choose? But most importantly, how did
you choose yours?

How do you just say, “The one?” and
not say, “Which one?!”

Nirvana, Green Day, MCR, Weezer,
And Papa Roach, all Rock, no soft
lyrics, just plain, normal, crazy, loud, scared
voices out loud on your radio

Pop, Rock, Rap, Country, no matter what it is…

It still fits in

NOT WITH ME THOUGH
I’ll keep my 80’s Rock Music…
Thanks Dad
