The Future Seems Foggy

Hard to believe we are already at day 7 of 8 for poetry camp! These students have continuously shown up with creativity, enthusiasm, questions, and more. Today, we explored writing through a scavenger hunt challenge, mad libs exploration, and some classic Zip, Zap, Zop theater games!

After all this fun, we settled in to read Chen Chen’s poem “When I Grow Up I Want to Be a List of Further Possibilities.” We explored the power of repetition and all the reasons why a person would want to repeat themselves, exploring emphasis, changing of meaning, and more.

Students were then tasked with writing their own future poem of themselves! Check out today’s poems from Twain Poetry Camp, 6th-8th.

Mr. Barr 6th-8th Poetry Camp!

"A Better Me" Sol M.

Someone calm and caring
Someone great and unique
Someone known and respected

When people look up to me
When I’m seen as more then
a child

"I hope when I grow up" Leo P.

Meanwhile the world keeps spinning around and around
The people get closer to death
others grow and grow, or others just came to the world
but for me I am hoping lots of things when I grow
Time never stops and never takes a break
Like you are growing second by second
I hope I was successful in life
Me as a doctor
Me as a tall person like a tree

"Atomic Life" Sofia M.

To all those atoms
& all those electrons

My Best Friend &
my theoretical papers

I want to have countless
nights
writing papers

with bags under my eyes
& my caffeine addiction

"Trying to clear the fog" Georgie J.

Imagining the future seems foggy sometimes
So I have to clear it
Almost like clouds taking shape

There are countless jobs I wish to do
To help defend people, to help sea animals
Even then these seem foggy
But what is clear is being a well known Artist
Thought it’s clear to see it’s in gray
Something I would enjoy
Yet fearful of being told “It’s not a real job”
Sometimes I wish to be the moon
just having to watch over the earth and rotate
Maybe even a simple house pet
then I just have to worry about when’s dinner
Though the hardest to see through the fog is the easiest
Just to be kind to myself and love myself

"Imaginative" Leia VC.

It makes my heart
feel like I am
something

"When I grow up" Jaylah F.

When I grow up
I wanna be a
nail tech, a good
mom to my kids,
be my brother’s joy,
my mom’s happiness,
my little cousin’s
inspiration, my friends’
joy, I wanna be more
connected to god, and
I want to make my
mom proud because she
had made me proud. I
want to be a red and
black rose.
