Still I Rise

Last week, Waters 6th grade students dove into the world of similes. We read the poem “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou and were struck by how many similes the poem contained. Students then go a chance to write their own poems, offering inspirational words to themselves. Here are a few of them:

Ms. Smallwood's 6th Grade

Thailand Roman R.

My eyes are brown like Pad Thai noodles

My hair is black like tapioca in a Thai iced tea

I’m funny like Chris Rock

and a good boy like I should be

I want to be rich like a king but successful like Jeff Bezos

My shoes are rusty like Draymond Green’s jumpshot

but are still useful on the court

Me Charlie D.

I like being short like a chair

so I can get away from my

friends

I like being quiet like a

mouse, so I would go

unnoticed 50% of

the time

I like being able to act like my dad

being silly and sassy when

I want, just how I

like it.

I like the color of my hair

it’s brown like a tree

trunk

sometimes my laugh is like my

favorite character’s laugh

cheerful and funny

I like the way I could be kind

as my cousin Jon

Behind My Back JJ Q.

They say my hair is ugly as a

warthog

Do I care?

I say my hair is as gold as a mine

Behind my back they say my tongue is

as long as the Nile

My weight is as light as a feather

But my ears are as goof as an

elephant

I hear them

But do I care?

No.

As Maya Angelou once said,

I rise!

Ms. Roman's 6th Grade

Body Juliana H.

My arm is as skinny as a branch

My foot is as small as a blueberry

My brain is smart like a calculator

My eyes are brown like a tree branch

All together my body is perfect

Myself Hank

I like myself

as you would like your partner

I like my self

feet long like summer break

I like myself

Hands as big as an airport

I like myself

Arms long as the milky way

I like myself

thighs thick as the Eiffel tower

I like myself

hair thin like a pencil lead

I like myself

body tall as a skyscraper

I like myself

IQ smart as Albert Einstein

Superpowers Julian H.

Hands sweaty

like an overcooked chicken

Legs quick like a roadrunner

I’ve got superpowers

Arms long as a pole

Reflexes like a ninja

I’ve got

Superpowers

I’m aggressive

like a lion

I’m skilled

as a pro

I’ve got

Superpowers
