Fun with Sounds

We kicked off our first day of the second week of poetry camp at Mark Twain learning about onomatopoeia and how we can add sounds to our writing. Ms. Carther’s 3rd -5th Grade students listened to scatting by the late great Michael Jackson and read “Noise Day” by Shel Silverstein for inspiration to incorporate onomatopoeia in their poetry. Check out the work of young poets, Calvin, Izel and Kenya!

Outside Music Calvin

Vrrrrrm! Motor cycles speeding through the road.

Tweet tweet birds chirping through the breeze of air.

Aaahh! Kids screaming of joy!

Summer Break Izel

I’m going to the beach this summer.

I will hear the waves crashing on summer break.

I will be beating to pounding music.

I can’t wait to go munching at my favorite restaurants.

Pop Boom Snap, 4th of July fireworks.

I swim in my pool underwater and gargle.

Outside at the Playground Kenya

The wind was blowing the trees, bushes, grass, leaves and I think

The birds are talking and think the leaves are waking, crunch

And the leaves making them crazy like they ate too much sugar.
