A Neighborhood Tour

I cannot believe we’re already halfway through our time together at Sabin! It’s been such a blast combining poetry and crafts, and today was no different. After a fun warm-up of Follow The Leader and musical chairs, we talked about metaphors and got to write lovely poems about hope with Ms. Maya. After decorating our bird with feathers of hope, we took a neighborhood tour around the classroom while reading Taylor Byas poem “South Side (V).” Students wrote poems describing what their neighborhoods are like, then we decorated a giant map where each student claimed a block. Check out what we wrote below:

My neighborhood is flowers

The people are running everywhere

My street is bike riding

My memories are garbage trucks

Chipotle, and sometimes tacos

My neighborhood is an elephant

living upstairs of my apartment

My favorite sound in my neighborhood

is the wind swooshing left and right

In my neighborhood park, the

sun shines bright but no one is there

Mi barrio es comodo tranquilo

mi barrio huele a perfume y la flores

mi barrio es compartible es comodo

y agusto. Huele a asado de carne

Tengo amistades o vendedores de

los sonidos de los carros pasando
