Life the Storm, the Rollercoaster, the River

This past Monday Lawndale explored the meaning of life in metaphors. We did an activity called “the river of life” where students mapped out their lives up to this point using the image of a river and natural elements to represent different aspects of growing up (mountains, whirlpools, sunlight, trees). These elements helped poets explore their accomplishments, losses, evolutions, and dreams. Using their new maps, poets took the metaphor of the “river of life” and explored other metaphors they could use to describe their experiences and journeys. Enjoy!

“Two Paths”

by Jada M.

My life is like a path

there are two ways to life

right and wrong but what

if right is wrong and wrong is right

Make the right choice and everything

will be alright

but in life you make mistakes

bumps and bruises like rocks and sticks

(two paths your choice)

“My Life As…”

very complicated so today

i know more than you think i should

know my life is like a rollercoaster

there are ups and downs and very dark

turns then your life feels like getting

off the rollercoaster it’s very

sickening but you just gotta

keep going and on to the

next rollercoaster

“My Life My Life”

by Jymia E.

My life is like a book it goes

up and down. Sometimes it’s hard

but sometimes it’s cool. I feel

like I’m the only one who can

walk in my shoe. Down the river

I go nice and slow sometimes

I never know. Sometimes when you

go down the river it can be

cool.

“Valley of Snakes”

by Janya C.

I walk alone through the

storm nobody knew late

night rides this how I walk

in my shoes. I cry sometimes

but nobody knows I ran away

from my problems so nobody

made the news. This the way

I live let me see you walk in

my shoes. The river pushes me away

so much I can’t hate deep down in

the valley full of snakes.
