Ekphrastic Poems for Ronan Park

At Haugan we worked with the North River Commission to write ekphrastic poems about sculptures at Ronan Sculpture Park! In a few weeks, we’ll go to the park to see the sculptures and have a poetry field trip! Here are a few of our poems!

Anchor

Sara c.

Trying and trying to fly but being held down.
Stuck and wiggling
Trying to be FREE but being helped by an anchor
Trying to bloom become the pretty flower everyone wants to see
but can only get so far.
So far until u get dragged down
Dragged by the words the thoughts…
Not until u get back up to try and bloom again.
Just to be dragged back down by the anchor.

Stone Strength

-Jaelynn

a woman with struggles

her mind filled with the tornado of her stress

but she can put it behind her and feel strong

the body she wears around

Not big not small

it’s beautiful

like a hummingbird’s kindness…

the stone surrounding

unbreakable like the spirit that still lives

I can feel her pain

the pain that becomes her mind

no one knows who she is

you can hear it in her tone that she’s hurt

but her face says differ

she follows the scent of a fresh batch of flowers

picked by the gentlest hands

she is like a flower

she blooms and feels special

but over time she falls

 losing herself

but with just the right amount of strength

She’ll bloom again

Stronger than stone…
