Bug Off! (pt. 2)

This was my last day with the 7th graders and I’m going to miss them. I was dreading teaching 7th grade because I remember how horrible MY 7th grade inner and outer life was. But even though it feels like your whole world is on fire at all times, on the outside, you’re still just a person. Thanks for the sweet memories 7th grade persons!

When I saw her, the tarantula, she wasn’t what I expected,
I always imagined a scary, hairy creature,
like in the movies,
when I saw her she was beautiful
red and pretty,
it’s not that bad I said to myself,
while I was still screaming.

You are nasty, gross and prickly, you little tarantula
I don’t want to touch you
I would rather have my eyes gouged out
Toasted over a campfire
And have them fed to me
I think you’re gross and I don’t like you
I’m sorry, not sorry

It looks at your hand
has legs on your skin
and don’t be afraid.
It’s as calm as a sloth.

Fangs as red as a rose
and legs as gentle as twigs
with his eight dark eyes
looking right at you.

Why would anyone want to hurt you?

Dear Rosy the Rose-haired spider,
You’re so sweet and very neat
I want to hold you but I am scared
I hope that’s not too offensive.
Tiny Rosy the Rose-haired spider
Lives in a flower pot threading her silk into a beautiful
creation.
You’re soft and you melt other insects’ hearts.
It’s too bad you live in a plastic box
I wish you could be free.
But you are just a spider.

(ed. note – the line “you melt other insects’ hearts” is wonderful because the way the rose-haired tarantula eats its prey is by injecting it with venom that liquefies its insides – ie, melting their hearts.)

Dear bugs,
You are pretty. You guys look yummy. You crawl a lot. You are amazing. Please don’t invade my house. Jacob’s house is better than mine. If you wanna invade a house, invade his house.

Bugs, predators or prey? They work with the food chain like us with the social hierarchy. Hard, soft, smooth, or rough. All with different features and abilities. With different ways of hunting and strategizing. They put fear in the mind of the crazed and unstable. But for the strong, they are mere companions and friends. Oh dear bugs, what will we do with you?

You are magnificent beasts,
you can survive on almost
every continent on Earth.
You are very powerful creatures
with strange ways of life.
You bugs are truly mysterious
miracles of life.

Dear Bugs

Bugs are cool
Except roaches
Roaches are bad
Other bugs cool
What is
happening?!
Wait a minute.
I AM THE BUG!

Dear Rosie

You South American Rascal
So calm and gentle
Especially when the web came out of your butthole
This was for you, Rosie
