Beginning the New Year With Acrostics

For our 1st session of the new year, me and the 2nd graders at Swift Elementary spent time getting reacquainted and sharing stories about what we did over the holiday break. After that, I asked the question, “What do you know about poetry?” and then we moved into writing acrostic poems. In acrostic poems, the first letters of each line are lined up from top to bottom to form a word.

What do you know about poetry?

  • “It is having fun writing – painting but with words and singing.”
  • “Poetry is like short and meaningful stories.”
  • “There are many kinds of poetry!”
  • “Poetry is something you see and hear, and you can make it personal and original.  It doesn’t have to be like anyone else’s.”
  • “We read a lot and listen a lot in poetry.”
  • “If you copy someone else’s poetry, you are not impressing yourself!”

Each resolution is carefully chosen
Solving resolutions makes the world a better place
Outside of the world, people are trying their hardest to solve resolutions so you should help them
Like yourself, resolutions are making your home a better place to be
Utterly – resolutions are utterly hard to make so you should try your hardest to make good ones
Time – you have one month to create a good resolution
In your house, everyone else is trying to make a resolution, so why don’t you try to make one all together
On February, you should try to make those resolutions happen
Next year make another resolution, if you haven’t already thought of it
