What Makes a Poem?!

Ms. Widman

High School Creative Writing

For our first lesson together at Amundsen, the students read Rachel Richardson’s “Questions”. We discussed the parts of a poem and how image can drive the emotional response of the reader. The students were then tasked with asking questions about themselves, poetry, the world then writing their own lyrical answers in response. I am so pumped to publish the following budding poets!

“Confused” by Rachel C.

Is she going through a loss–

they could be–

maybe she’s hiding it

Why is she so curious–

there’s a lot to explore–

everything feels never ending

Why do I relate to her–

maybe we’re the same

or maybe we’re not alone

“Answering Machine” by Ruby R.

When is being jealous ok?

I chide and chastise each day and on the walls

of my house there’s invisible rules I wrote

with a crayon when I was young.

Don’t be jealous.

But sometimes it’s ok? When? When will it be ok? When

will time open a window I can climb through to the other side

where being jealous was ok with me. I need

to feel and and it’s like nothing. It’s like nothing.

Are there any sure things?

Betting on boxing and horses and basketball and the superbowl.

I need a sure thing–everything got dumped

sky falling down right on my house, my head.

So I need a sure thing because writing a list and writing a script

and writing my name and saying I, I, I, I, I am 1,200 times

to fill a box isn’t even a sure thing.

Where can I buy pink sweatpants?

In a disparate sparse train of thoughts

it seems like pink sweatpants

are the only thing I can focus all my attention on.

There is no metaphor.
