“…Would it evaporate like steam?”

I got the idea for “The Beauty of Questions” lesson awhile back when I was looking through the Book of Questions by Pablo Neruda and illustrated by Paloma Valdivia, which was published in 2022. I love Neruda’s questions because they fill my head with wonder. The lesson gives me a chance to share that the work of many poets, writers, scientists, and others begins – not with answers – but with questions. Today at Twain, 3rd graders talked about what it means to be curious. Students said that being curious means: “being interested,” “wanting to learn more,” “being suspicious,” “feeling shy and wondering about things.

We looked at a few of Neruda’s questions, such as “Where can you find a bell/ That rings inside your dreams?” and “Where does the rainbow end,/ In your soul or on the horizon?” and noticed that these questions are kind of….well….unanswerable! I asked students to try to come up with questions that google can’t answer. Keep reading to enjoy the questions they came up with!
