Wanted: A Wizard’s Assistant

Halloween is this week, a time of candy, costumes, and spooky fun. For their 4th session of poetry I asked Twain 4th graders, “What is something that you want, that seems impossible? How can you get it? Some students imagined having their very own zombie, dinosaur, and Professor Dumbledore’s wand. Other students dreamed of a new puppy, learning how to knit, going to a concert, and a future career in the military.

Together we listened to the audio recording of Laura Mucha reading her poem, “Wanted: Wizard’s Assistant.” The poem is written as a job ad in a newspaper. Throughout the poem Mucha’s uses alliteration, repeating two or more words that share the same consonant sounds in her lines, to show what a wizard wishes for in an ideal assistant. Potent potion pondering/ good at goblin gobbling, wonderful with wobsicles/ frightening frogs on Fridays.

Inspired by Mucha’s spellbinding poem, 4th graders created their poems asking for fantastical things. Readers enjoy the magical poems and pictures below.
