Summertime! (3rd grade)

As the weather changes and things start to warm up, it felt like the perfect time to read “Knoxville, TN” by Nikki Giovanni. We watched a video of her reading the poem from Knoxville itself and talked about how we can use all of our senses to represent our favorite seasons. We also were very interested in Giovanni’s very short lines and lack of punctuation. We experimented with different formats for our poems to see if that made them feel different to read.

I Love Spring
--Abhipsa

In the
spring
I love
to eat
ice cream
and the
ice cream
is sweet
and
soft
and delish
and I
love the
warmth
of the
sun on
my
arm
and
my
birthday
is
in
Spring
and I love
the sound
of the birds
chirping
and I
love
seeing
the flowers
bloom
and grow
and it
is the
perfect temperature
to to
the park
because
it is not
too hot
and not
too cold.
I love the seasons
--Arya

I love the
seasons
spring and fall
because in spring
you can go
to the beach
or park. In
fall you
can go to
the park
or sstay home
and rest, you
can also eat
mochi and ice cream
in the spring and in
fall you can eat matcha or pizza
and I see
the plants gorwing
and I hear
the birds chirpingand
in fall I see
the leafs falling
down and
I hear
the wind moving around.
