Sounds We Hate, Sounds We Love

We all have sounds we adore and sounds that make us cringe. The 7th graders of Nettelhorst asked themselves what these sounds were for them before we read “Sweet Like a Crow” by Michael Ondaatje. After exploring what similes were, students then created their own similes to describe their favorite and least favorite sounds. From funny to heartfelt, students reflected on the sounds of their favorite bands, rain, horses, and much more.

“Squeaky Shoes“
by KJ L.

Squeaky shoes are as loud as
a siren, as annoying as a
screaming baby, cringy as a 4th
grader, as annoying as AI singing
as annoying as pots clinking
together

“Her Voice“
by Filip A.

Beautiful as birds singing in the morning.
Relaxing like a lit fireplace
Addicting like popping a bubble wrap
Pretty as stargazing in the middle of the
night on an empty field.
Sweet as honey.
If I could pick one sound I could
hear for the rest of my life,
it would be her voice

“ew“
by Penelope S.

Fork scratching on the plate
like nails on a chalkboard,
“Dad, stop scratching your
fork on the plate. That
sound is gnarly, bro.”
“Penelope, stop being dramatic.”
The sound continues like a
loop, an endless torture that
life has bestowed onto me.
“Oh my actual gosh, that sound
sounds like absolute hell.
I would rather be deaf than
hear that.”
“Penelope! Please just…shut up.”
“But dad- I would rather
be dead as meat than
hear that awful sound, it’s
just so…ew. I hate it.”
“Whatever.”
The fork scratches against the
plate more aggressive than ever,
Scratches that are the spawn
of Satan.
Scratches that are as a chainsaw,
scratches that make you
consider death more than
listening.
Stuff that makes you
want to put a bullet in
your head,
stuff like that.
It’s just…ew.
“I’m leaving, this sound is
driving me nuts.”
A slam is heard, a screech
similar to one that is
screaming for help.
“You’re as boring as a greyscale
painting, oh my gosh Penelope,
Such a drama queen.”

“NoRedInk“
by Reagan B.

I don’t like NoRedInk
it’s as boring as
watching paint dry.
As hard as going
to space.
Takes a long time
like walking across
the U.S. and back.
And as useless as
a picture frame
with no picture.

“Trotting of a Horse“
by Zoe F.

Trotting as you hear click clack of horses hooves hit the ground
A magical ride
A magical time of day
Trotting like a sound coming from a trumpet
A Day on the trail
The best thing of that day
Trotting like a soft sound of chalk on a board
A magical ride
A magical time of day
Trotting like an alarm clock at 6:00am
A Day on the trail
The best thing of that day
Trotting like a bucket of ice getting crushed
A magical ride
A magical time of Joy
Trotting like cleats on concrete
A Day on the trail
The best thing of that day
Trotting, a horse’s speciality

“The best music“
by Sienna A.

I put my headphones on and the first
song is as fast as a race car
It’s as sweet as candy
Angsty as a whiney teenager
Cool as ice
It’s sour like a lime
The band is as Green as grass

“Rainfalls Cycle“
by Bellamy R.

Rainfall
soothing like silk
peaceful like a Harp
it’s music radiating throughout the sky
Quiet as a cat
landing on its feet
Even if it was raining cats and dogs

My ears are blessed
Even if thunder rolls around
like an engine about to excel
Raindrops thumping on the ground
like a heartbeat
The raindrops going “Pa-dum” when they
hit the floor
like the cloud is on a treadmill

But when the cloud takes a rest
A rainbow forms
Bright like a lamp
blaring in my eyes
its colors shine bright
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.

My eyes are blessed
rainfalls cycle throughout the day
It circles like a bike
which I ride on through the
rain
everyday.

“Basketball Shot“
by King W.

Cool like a look away
Perfect as a set point
arc like Saint Louis
rotation like a beyblade
stressful as a test
green as my celebration
