For their 5th week of poetry, Twain 5th graders discovered exciting things about nature. I asked students what were some of their favorite things about nature, their responses were amazing: flowers, rain drops, autumn leaves, snowflakes, squirrels, birds chirping, trees, and oceans.
Together we read the poem, “Sky Wears A Hat,” by Chicago poet Sandra Cisneros. In her poem Cisneros uses personification to imagine that the sky, just like a human can wear a hat. With a hat all its own/made from dirty sheep-wool/A hat wide enough to dye the earth indigo and lavender with shade. We also discussed how the sky’s hat might change colors throughout the day, dark gray when it’s rainy, baby blue in the summer afternoons, or red and pink when the sunsets.
Students were inspired to write their poems about the wonders of nature, exploring how plants and animals, just like humans, can talk, express emotions, have fun with friends, and wear fabulous clothing.

Fruits and Trees
By Julian G.
Trees can grow flowers.
Fruits can grow seeds.
Trees can grow fruit.
Fruits can grow trees.
Trees can grow red
fruits like a mother
can have kids.
The fruits can be blue,
blend within the sky.
Grapes can be
green and red while,
Christmas can be white and gold.
A tree is a mother when
growing fruits, caring for them.
Fruits can grow to be yellow
like lemons and pineapples,
growing spiky and sour ,
sometimes sweet.
People can be sour and spiky,
the least they can be is sweet.
