Sing! Poems Made From Song Lyrics and Titles

As we continue distance instruction, students at Taft Freshman Academy continue to generate beautiful poems! This week’s poems are composed of all song lyrics and titled and are inspired by poet, Kevin Young

Lesson Note: ‘In a time of crisis, poetry can help focus our fears and transform ‘noise into music’ … In effect, poetry “aims in every possible way to reaffirm the world that we actually inhabit, in all its vital, messy, beautiful, tragic reality. Mar 10, 2020, The Washington Post.

Standing in the rain
By Jp P.

Standing in the rain

All alone

Feeling like a magnet

To every single drop

Coming out of the sky

Thinking and thinking

If I should’ve

Done anything different

And if things

Would have ended in a better way.

Fish Story
By Iain J.

I wanna be your dog
I get those goosebumps every time
Tables turned, lessons learned,
you get burned for playing by the rules
I’m waiting for you but
There’s something left untold
I’ll just stick my head in the corner
Because swollen and small is where
You’ll find me now
I’ll put your head up on my wall
I’m through with you

When will my life
Begin Hey baby won’t you look
my way I love you then and i love you
Now The way you are One in
7 billion Why does it have to
be me Cuz we are living in
a material world & i danced in the
Dessert
In the pouring
Rain so lets
Go out
With a bang

(Love is a myth)
By Oliver N.

I realized now,
Only time I feel pain when I’m feelin’ love
You so lame, took me as a game
Oh, I hope someday
I’d be wishin’ I were gone
But there’s something else (oh yeah)
Nobody gonna slow me down, oh no
I got to keep on movin’
But now I can’t think a thought without wishing you were here
I lied, I was wrong
I am nothing without you

NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP, NEVER GONNA LET YOU DOWN, NEVER GONNA RUN AROUND AND DESERT YOU

The way life goes
By Layla T.

Can’t say this enough
Lifes a mess
No tears left to cry
&
As long as we got each other
Still think about you
I want you to know that I’m never leaving
best friend

Lonely Road
By: Jonathan A.

Is this real life is this a fantasy
Devil standing here trying to make a deal
Don’t stand so close to me
meanwhile So if by the time the bar closes and you feel like falling down I’ll carry you home tonight I don’t need you at all she believes me
When a heart breaks it don’t breakeven
I walk a lonely road it’s the only one I’ve ever known
I’m the chosen 1 see my potential so they fear me

See you again
By Giselle D.

I can’t wait to meet her
I wanna be the one to walk in the sun &
If i ain’t got you You can count on me like 1,2,3
and I’ll be there,
I’m more than grateful for the time we spent &
I can’t resist your charms
And now the day bleeds into nightfall
and you’re not here to get me through it all
“Don’t forget me”, I beg &
We can go nowhere but up from here
See you again.

Tonight
By Jocelyn R.

May I have your attention please
We pop out at your party
Tonight’s the night
Shine bright like a diamond
Like the 4th of July
Everybody just have a good time
I always seem to smile
I’m just focused on music
Wanna have fun
It’s a party in the USA

Feelin’ Alright
By Jessie N.

Say hello on a day like today
You’re old enough some people say
So, I just did some talkin’ to the sun,
I don’t need you to worry for me ‘cause I’m alright
And you should know,
you know by now, the winner takes it all,
sway through the crowd
to an empty space, just like the white-winged dove,
it can happen to everyone eventually,
I’ll send an S.O.S. to the world

Fire
By Jamhica Y.

Another day goes by
And I breathe disaster
The nature of it all
All around me
Maybe it seems so strange
We’ve both been there sometimes
Sometimes I run
I can’t compete
I never face the music when it’s dire
Let’s make fire
Drown me in the flames

Just the two of us
By Sophie P.

I live for you just the two
Of us got a whole lot of
History we’re not who we used to be
We gotta get away from here we can
Make it if we tried but where were
You somewhere far away from here did
the wind sweep you
Off your feet and there’s
Nothing she can do about
It trying to remember how
It feels to have a heart beat its
Hard when we argue
