Shelter-In Poems #4: Police Brutality/ Hair/Small Mexican Doll/Me/I Am/ I Am/ I Am

As students sheltered-in-place,  the 7th, 8th, and 9th graders at Taft Freshman Academy generated beautiful poems via E-Learning. This week’s poems are inspired by A Hot Property by Roland Wallace and the minimalist, William Carlos Williams’ poem,  The Locust Tree In Flower

Lesson Note: ‘In a time of crisis, poetry can help focus our fears and transform ‘noise into music’ … In effect, poetry “aims in every possible way to reaffirm the world that we actually inhabit, in all its vital, messy, beautiful, tragic reality.”  Mar 10, 2020, The Washington Post.

Who am I
Mark C.

I am a do-gooder, an almost always on timer
I am who you think I am not
Optimistic and pessimistic
No water, but fish has been caught
I am realistic, I can talk while I talk
I am loyal the like my money I come and I go
Obviously, I’m kidding, was it really funny though?
I am funny but I’m not
You don’t know me
Who am I?

I am… me myself and I
I am a student of life,
I am a goof with my friends,
I am a teacher to younger kids,
I am an interesting person.
I am a good student planning a good future ahead.

The Real Me
Nyasia Q.

I am a self-effacing, an introverted character.

I am reluctant and hesitant at times.

I am circumspect and cautious occasionally.

I am extroverted and articulate once in a while.

But for the moment that I am myself,

I am considered to be too loquacious.

Accordingly,

people only see the reticent side of me.

They do not see the communicative side of me.
