Return to the blues

Brennemann 5th graders returned to their bluesy ideas from last week. While much of the blues are steeped in heartfelt sadness, some blues can make us laugh. Remembering that blues songs and poems have rhythm, rhyme, and repetition, some students worked to give their poems a musical feel. We had time toward the end of class to imagine ourselves in a blues cafe where “up-and-coming blues artists” shared their work. Enjoy!

The bad day blues
by Boney Fingers Silly Washington
aka Janelle

Mmmmmm
we have a bad day every once in a while
we don’t wanna play games, but I believe a smile
will make our day. It’ll change your day
and make a way. But that way must be a good way.

We have a right
to defend and fight
But that right must be fair
If we never share,
that fight will never be fair.
Oooo, I have the bad day blues.

I Can’t Take These Players
by Boney Dog Jackson
aka Jocelyn

Every day Real Madrid loses
Nicolas Jackson real back thriving
bones, ACL’s, ankles, breaking like how
dogs, cats, and crows are rowing
in the true sad story
Lucas Vasquez suddenly don’t know how to play
in plain day
they
are giving me the blues
I am so doomed.

Fat Franklin aka Angel

Why the blues? What is my blues?
going to the dentist
you don’t want to be in my shoes
getting a tooth pulled feels so bad
it makes me feel mad
I’ve got the
going to the dentist blues.

Playing in the Rain Outside
by Peg Leg Foot Davis
aka Nancy

playing outside
is always a fun time
but when it rains
we can’t play

playing outside
is always a fun ride
is a fun time outside
every day, every time
playing outside
is always a fun time.

You Need to Look before You Do
by Lazy Bones Brown
aka Sebastian

version 1:
My blues is to waste food that the only
thing left is my spoon. And I feel
sad when someone or I waste some food.
And I felt bad for the people in Africa
having a bad time, and I’m looking for something
if I can make them shine. Waste food my blues.

version 2:
My blues is about wasting food
All I have left is my empty spoon
it makes me feel sad
it makes me feel bad
for people all over the world who are having a bad time
I’m looking to do something to make them shine
wasting food gives me the blues

Fat Gumbo Bradley aka Ahmed
