Poetry is Perfect: Ars Poeticas

Last week marked our last week writing poem with Waters 6th graders. In our many weeks together, students learned about poetry in its many, many forms and wrote dozens of thoughtful, heartfelt, and funny poems of their own. It’s fitting to wrap up our poetry sessions with ars poetica. An ars poetica, to put it simply, is a poem about poetry and/or being a poet. Students wrote some very thoughtful reflections on what they’ve learned as poets this year. Take a look below and enjoy!

🙂 Poetry 🙂
by Henry S.A.

Poetry is perfect, it calms me
I think positive when I hear a
poem. It’s like I’m on a rollercoaster
of words, beautiful words beautiful
like poetry, poetry is perfect.

Differences
by Nora M.

Poems, Poems, Poems
There’s so many kinds
Writing a poem can be flowers swaying in the wind
Writing a poem is like the noise of angry people
Sometimes you just have to go with the flow
People may dislike it, but that doesn’t matter.

The Ups and Downs of Poetry

Poems
Poems
They can suck your soul out of you
And give it back later
They can be confusing
But always a good way to escape from everything
Trying to rhyme can be challenging
Poems are like the climb for a dime
And the fall back to the trees
or
The plummet to the core of the earth
And the scale to the summit
It can feel like surfing on the top of a wave
Then falling to the bottom of the ocean floor
Seeing submarine pals and ways to get back up
Poems
They include a little bit of everything
References, rhymes, emotions and more.

The Poem
by Lola M.

A poem is like a lion growling
It speaks its adventures
Sporty, it describes me
The fight keeps on fighting
Never stop, you can lose but
also gain. I am me, not you
but me

What poetry is like
by Elsa C.

Poetry is quick like a hummingbird
Calming like a whale song
Challenging like a floating ballon just out of reach
And rewarding, building a community

Poems are just
pure creativity
you can do anything
you dream of!

New Stanza!

Okay, I mean literally anything
I would do a concrete poem
right now but I don’t think
they want to take a picture

Simple concrete
poem
only
lines
that are very small
to
make
a
simple, simple, simple shape

Poems can do anything
But all come to an end

Ars Poetica

Poems
A delightful thing
Found here and over there
Found almost everywhere
Happy or sad
Emotionally controlled
A string of captivating rhymes
Like the sun and the plants
As the poet and the pen
To make the world a better place
Poems
There is no right or wrong
A banana
Yellow and bright
Brown and spotty
But both are delicious
Poems
Some have no meaning
Meaning means nothing
Poems need no meaning
Poems need a poet, a pen
Imagination.
Poems.

Ars Poetica

I am funny I act like
a bunny I am clumsy I eat
carrots, it’s calming. I jump in the
air I hit the floor and the
floor is hard. I then do it all
over again.
