Poetry at the Movies

Ms. Widman

High School Creative Writing

This week the students at Amundsen went into the cinematic universe and looked at poetry that uses movie like techniques. We read “Please Refrain from Talking During the Movie” by Robert Polito and “Movie” by Eileen Myles. During the brainstorm the students were asked what would be some settings, soundtracks/scores, and metaphors in the movie of their life. If I could publish all 32 students this week, I would. Every single poet produced something so true to the voice they’ve been cultivating and the images they used–hallelujah worthy. I am so proud of these writers. Here are this week’s poems:

by Adan M.

It’s either dull

                                 like the color gray

or bright

                                  like meadows of green grass.

Borius, My Life is at Home

by Uriel F.

Always romanticizing imaginations

thinking about love that isn’t there

I want it so bad, but I don’t reach to it.

Feels like a joke

but wait until it is one.

I walk in the streets of my own self image.

I think of myself as a moving plot

but wait until it is one.

The garage is where every hangout stays in the past.

Each friend has their ways to cherish the moment.

Juice world brings us his talents and his unrealized work.

The main man only wants us to understand

but wait until we will.

We never go that far,

not even our main attractions,

The City of Lake Michigan.

We can only imagine how it could’ve been like

there’s so many questions and concerns

there’s no end to this story

but wait until there is one.

Don’t Tell Me What to Do!

by Gianna O.

Stop, I’ve had enough.

The rules you give me are the worst.

I won’t follow them anymore,

I’ll go to Skokie Mall and Barnes & Noble

if I want.

Just listen, Gianna.

I’m 17, I don’t need you

telling me what to do.

Pink Floyd Plays When You Plug Your Phone into the Car Jack

by Asher D.

Pink Floyd plays when you plug your phone into the car jack

and I hold your drink for you.

Now I’m a cup holder.

I want to hide everything else from you

just as I cover my gaze from who you are.

I have no clue who you are.

My gaze is turned to the roof of the car

like a cup holder

I am here to do what I’m here to do

like a cup holder

I hold the plastic up.

I am a cup holder.

You pull up to my street

and take the drink out of my hands.

Messy Room

by Paola R.

Messy head

the only thing being well kept

is a book shelf

books filled with sticky notes

some have more pink sticky notes

some have more blue sticky notes

some books are filled with poetry

others are filled with fantasy

of what my life could be

each book being well kept & dusted

every week.

The same can’t be said of

my floors which are

hiding under my clothes.

A Black Noir

by Octavia C.

I am forgetting what was done to me.

I am forgetting that I wished to fly away.

I can forget you

or forgive you,

which one will it be?

You stood there

with no avail

moving us from that apartment to the next

into smaller settings.

But a family miles apart from each other

are you, are you, coming to the tree?

Will we meet there and let the war begin?

THe restless nights.

The sirens hailing a hopeless howl

outside of our temporary apartment.

He’d hit her

and would try to punish me,

but don’t worry, he didn’t get far.

You see,

my fears

remain at the bottom of the sea.

No matter the hurt, no matter the failed attempts

to crunch and devour me

I’ll cry in the shower, don’t worry,

I’ll contain my brimstone fiery anger, trust me.

Yeah, I’m mad;

I am exploding.

But to keep going

this volcano will not erupt today

for my own sanity’s sake.

Trust me;

don’t worry.
