We talked about things that we like, before reading and discussing the poem, “The Reason I Like Chocolate” by Nikki Giovanni. In addition to writing about things the poet likes, such as chocolate, scary movies, and books, we had fun discussing the stanza that reads: “I like to cry sometimes ’cause/ everybody says “What’s the matter/ don’t cry.” We agreed that the poet likes the attention they get from others when they cry! The poem also made it easy for us to identify and talk about LINE and STANZA.

The reason I like sports is because it is fun to do
with friends and family.

when she’s mad I get so happy
