Superhero Poems – Avondale Logandale 5th Grade – Winter 2020

During this session of the Chicago Poetry residence Avondale-Logandale students discussed Black History Month, they then discussed leaders from the Black community and their superhero-like qualities. Students then created their own superhero poems and practiced literary devices like alliteration, metaphor, and simile.
This was an exercise in self-awareness, reflection, and identity while creatively inventing or naming personal “super” powers.

Group Poem

Not being separate is fair,
illusions make me aware,
to give peace and love to everybody,
you care.
My superpowers are
lifting but who would dare.
When you have food
you would share
when you have telekineses
people start to stare
and that’s how I share
every power is unique
There’s no wall you can’t tear.

Stephanie T.

My mom is a superhero
She gave birth to me and I came to this world
She cares for everyone
She has a sweet heart that I can get into
She has a superpower of giving everyone love
and making them smile
She stands up for me and others who are there
My mom makes me smile every day
That is why I respect and care for her all the time
My mom is there for me in the good times and the bad times
And we can fly together
that is my mom
my superhero
she is my life
I love her

My Superpoers Nelson C.

When I have the power to sing
I want knives in my hand like wolverine
I can be right
I am batman I stay up all night
I can be like batman and robin because my rap is so tight
when I sleep all day but don’t at night.

Natalie M

I’m a superhero who helps the homeless get homes
I’m s superhero who makes everyone laugh
I’m a superhero who cares about everyone
I’m a superhero who makes the world a better place

John G.

I am a superhero of
fire and water
I throw water and fire together
I fly everywhere
I save people from falling
when people are sad
I give them bear hugs
I save the earth from fires
everywhere I throw water
I am an animal
I could turn into a wolf
I help homeless people
and I protect the forest.

Miguel M.

I am the worlds greatest here
I am also the fastest person alive
I’m even faster than the flash
With my fast powers
I could stop a fire with the wind from my speed
One minute I’m in the U.S.A.
The next I’m in Japan
When I run fast and jump
I jump to the moon

Hailey G.

My superhero power is super speed
I would run across the city to save people
and not be late for school
To race in a marathon
to escape from a python snake
to be on time to eat cake.

Gerardo N.

My superpower is to be psychic.
What I will do is simple.
First I will destroy the wall.
I will help the poor.
And I will prevent and stop wars and robberies.
But, the first thing I will do is,
play with my powers,
and get revenge on bullies.
