Self Portraits

For our very first session together, Vaughn HS students created self portraits of themselves within their poems. We began by diving into an example of my own self-portrait and discussing what they’ve learned about me through this poem. They were excited to learn all of my ‘secrets’ within the poem, and decided to embed their own. After discussing poem structure and evaluating the lines and stanzas of the poem, students used a graphic organizer to organize the lines and stanzas of their poem however they’d like. By the end of our session, our class was a gallery of beautiful self-portraits. Enjoy these works of art below!

I am a child of God

I live in the North Side

I come alive when I start drawing anime and learning at school

I am no longer a bad brother

I love my family, my sisters, and drawing anime

Sometimes I wish I had my own family and a loving partner

I imagine I could be a better person and live forever

I am a child of my parents and of Edwards family

I live in Chicago in the North Side

I come alive with a pencil, unknown truth and key of friendship bonds

I am no longer the same person who is rude and afraid of life. I am not childish, greedy, nor scared of the dark.

I love spicy food and drill music, doing chores, gaming, and hanging with friends.

Sometimes I wish to do much more and see if my friends are going through tough times and depression. I want to care about people more

I imagine one day is to go to different places, be a streamer, see my friends, and work on myself more than ever
