Self Portrait Poems

Self Portrait Poems

For our second week together, we read “How To Draw a Child’ by Gloria Fuentes. It’s a short poem that packs a punch and describes some of the things you would need to draw a child. Freckles, love and soccer shoes were just a few. We also discussed how using the third person can be a helpful tool when writing about yourself, because using third person pronouns, can almost make it feel like you are a character in a book. This gives you space to “see” yourself in a different way. Students then did a brainstorm about what they would need to include in a drawing of themselves and created “sel-portrait” pieces from that. There were so many imaginative things in this weeks poems, and it was fun to read all the silly and beautiful things students came up with. Congratulations to this week’s published poets. Enjoy!

To Draw Kayleen Kayleen T

To draw Kayleen you have to

do it with intelligence

Blond tendrils, roots covering

the front of her dark

brown eyes, some covering

the side of her overjoyed smile

She wears french tip nails

with diamonds on it, for school

her pants go in, then out

like flares.

When she goes outside she always

has someone to go have

fun with. It feels brights

and after she finishes, she is tired.

Her family is very important to

her amd is there to make

her dream come true by

singing

She practices everyday, to hope

that her dream comes true

singing. To draw Kayleen you

have to do it with intelligence.

Untitled Matteo

To draw Matteo you have

to do it with happiness.

His eyes are brown

as a tree in the

forest in the

night.

He loves to wear

Shorte sleeve t-shirts

with a long sleeved

sweater.

with jeans and a big smile.

Everyday he puts on a big smile

on his face

then leaves to school.

He loves to draw when he puts

the pencil on the paper

the paper will be a

masterpiece.

When he is happy, he is

playing soccer

on the field with dirty

gloves.

He feels happy today.

He dreams about

doing something

good

on earth.

One day he will help people.

No 1. Ares B

To draw Ares you have to do it with happiness.

Make sure to paint eyes as dark

as dark chocolate. His smile shines bright

like the sun.

He wears baggy pants

everyday he smiles for joy.

He loves his games doom and halo.

He is always happy when he gets a hug.

He feels happy today

He dreams about

being in Mexico.

One day he will become an

astronaut or army man.
