Ode Poems

This week we worked on one of my favorite poetry writing exercises, ode poems! An ode is a poem that celebrates a person, place, thing, or idea and it often uses heightened language to celebrate that thing. We started off by talking about some everyday objects that we use and take for granted, and shared a bit about a moment when we realized how important that object is. After generating a list of special and everyday objects, students chose one and got to work on writing a piece that elevates and celebrates that object. There were so many things celebrated: cold bottles of water, huskies, hoodies, cheese, the list goes on. I hope you enjoy this week’s pieces. Congratulations to the published poets!

White Fox Andrew

White fox

I like

how you

look I

Like how

You feel

I like

everything about

you.

Your white

fur blends

into the

snow beautifully

your white fur

so soft

that it

could make

me fall

asleep. Your

beautiful ways

make me

gasp a

breath of

air.

Nova In The Sky Journee M.

My husky rests by me all night.

Bugging me, making me pet her.

Wanting me to take her outside.

Zoning off in the sky like a nova star.

As she’s stretching her legs as she’s walking,

her howling like a wolf wanting me

to feed her, hearing the sound of her

chewing her freshly cooked food, going around

the bowl, piece by piece after she’s finished.

Then going to her water after she finishes

her food.
