Poems of direct address

This week, we read and talked about poems that talk to a specific audience. We talked about the ways that our poems could care for someone we love and wrote poems that talked right to them. We talked about what type of voice we would use for the one we love and the ways that poems can nurture.

Molly

Cleaning up your mess
giving you your favorite treats
taking you for long walks across my neighborhood.
Playing a song on my piano when she’s with me.
Molly, don’t eat too much.
You make me feel like I am safe.
Stop barking at random dogs.
Your fur is as soft as a blanket.

Taking Care of My Guinea Pigs Gustavo

I will clean you. You will be as clean as a fresh load of laundry.
I will give you your fruits and vegetables. I will give you
my love and care like a mother gives their kids. I will give
your food and water like you’re eating like a little human.

When you come over Benjamin

When you come over I will,
watch tv with you we can watch any
show you want,
I will give you my most fluffy blanket
I have.
When you sleep I will turn on the ac
to keep you cool.
When you are hungry I will cook you your
favorite food.
When you are bored, we can do fun activities.
