Nice To Meet You

This past week Hyde Park Academy High School’s poetry club spoke their names. They discussed their origins, the power of each nickname, and what their names mean to them. These are two of those poems.

9th-12th Grade

Bernard... by Bernard T.

bravery saving me
in the situations
that I’m handling
patiently healing the scars
Bernard always ‘gone realize
the good and evil in different people
awareness rises
and truth be told
Nardo been bold
all of the shadows around him
but he latent to the gold

When I was born my father gave
me my name. It’s a shame I had
disdain because it was different.
Now that I know the history
behind it I don’t mind it.

My name is smooth just like
the bottom of your shoes George because I’m
very curious Dorsey because I’m Black
as night just like the sky sometimes
