It’s just emotions taking me over

The theme for Twain 6th graders’ 3rd poetry session was all about emotions. I showed students images from the films “Inside Out” and “Inside Out 2,” The main character in the films Riley, a young girl navigating through a new school and puberty. The emotions inside her head are having their own adventures alongside her.  Emotions such Envy, Joy, Anxiety, Disgust, and Anger wore a specific color and outfit, that reflected their personalities.

Together we read the poem, “Confidence” by former Shoesmith Elementary 6th grader Morgan H. In her poem Morgan uses personification, bringing the emotion of confidence to life by giving it human-like qualities. Confidence wears a blue shirt with white pants and blue shows/ I u don’t like her style; that’s not her problem/She keeps a smile that lights up every room.

Students then imagined how their own emotions would appear if they could walk, talk, and behaved just like a human. Please enjoy reading these profound and emotional poems.

Confusion by Kevin M.

Sitting in the back
of class confused.
Not knowing what
to do.

Everyone else always
knows what to do.
They are doing their
work, while I’m
sitting confused.

Asking the teacher
to explain again
makes me embarrassed.

Sometimes confusion
can be big or small,
depends on what you
understand.

Anger By Jaylah R.

She walks in the room
with a mad face.

Anger is red, tall, silk
hair, brown eyes, and
basic shirts.

Even if you chew too
loud, she would be
as mad as a T-Rex,
you see her every day.
She likes sleeping,
volleyball, running,
and playing with
friends.

She’s friends with
Happiness, Confusion,
and Boredom.

You can be mean
she won’t hesitate
to slap you.

Lazy Bum by Jario M.

This bum is always
at the couch, he’s
always on PS4
playing games.

He hasn’t cleaned his
room since he was 13,
this dude is 23 by the way.

He’s a fat bum sitting
in his room all day.
Even has 13-20 hours
on his phone a day
some of the times.

You can find him in
his room in his mom’s
house, the toilet, or
out to eat at Golden
Corral, because he
always Door Dashes.

He’s the worst at one
thing, called “Employment.”

My Emotion, Boredom Mariana G.

Boredom is dark blue,
and has long hair.
Boredom stands
weird like a flamingo.

Boredom does nothing all day.
He’s just lazy and
stares at the ceiling
and watches his phone.

I only get this emotion
when I’m done with
my homework.

Boredom doesn’t have
a family, he only has
friends, which are
Embarrassment,
sometimes he hangs
out with Confusion.

My Happiness Gio E.

Happiness looks like this.

They never get tired
and play and relax.

Mr. Happiness
appears when I think
of my family and God.

Happiness has Sadness
as their friend.

Example: Sadness
when someone
important for you
dies but Happiness,
because you know
you miss them.

Apathy by Rozie B.

His name is Apathy
Apathy lays there
just to die.

There is nothing in
his eyes.
All it takes just is one
glance.

Face pale as snow,
he’ll just ignore you
all you say

While there’s no one
in his life.

You can’t fall in love with Apathy.

Self-Esteem By Ariel A.

Before walking up
those stadium
stairs,

I catch a face I’ve
seen before, from
the opposing team.

He has a milk coffee
type of skin color,
his looks, confident,
cocky but in a good way.

Not the type of cocky
that’ll bring someone’s
confidence down,
to bring theirs up.

He seems to have a lot
of self-respect and
doesn’t care what
other people think of him.

And definitely has
respect for other
people too, not just
himself.

Sadness by Alexandra M.

Sadness looks like the color blue.
Dark, alone, and sad.
Late at night when its
dark and raining while
its cloudy, the sky looks
like its crying.

I see this emotion
at night a lot.
When the sky is
alone at night, it
hangouts with the
sun and the moon
listening to the music
and enjoying their
time together.

Disgust by Aria S.

I have long green hair
with long lashes and
I always prefer being
comfortable and cute
but dresses Disgust me.

I love complaining
because if someone
tries to argue,
I always win because
Disgust loves to talk.
People say I’m
brutally honest but
if you give me the ick
I will call you out.
I also always call
important for you out
if you’re acting
out of hand.

I love my friends and I
love correcting them.
Fear always disgust
me because he’s
afraid of (literally
everything).

Envy is always saying
she wishes she could
be me, like I know
I’m amazing but she
says it so much, it
disgusts me.

My Emotion, Boredom by Sebastian A.

The best place to start
with is in my bed, just
chillin on my phone
like always.

I usually wear
something like a gray
sweater, black plants,
and white shoes.

I like to play with
my friends during
class or on my game
console.

I see Boredom every day.

I have friends and
family, but usually
hang out with Disgust.
I see Boredom in a lot
of other places too
like Math class, Science class,
and ELA class.

Happy By Alvaro B.

Happy is fun and joyful.
The sky is clean and the
clouds look like marshmallows.

Slides nice and blue,
like the popsicles
they are selling
on the ice cream truck.

Anxiety by Jaylah F.

Anxiety wears all black
with her hoodie and
her hair in a ponytail.
Shaking her leg when
she sits, playing with
her hair, stayed up
all night thinking.
She cares about
how people think
about her, blocking
people out, and
stressing out day
and night, every
second.
