‘I try my best to do an around-the-world’ : Odes

Students read ‘Ode to my Shoes’ by Francisco X. Alarcon, and then crafted their own odes.  The 8th graders wrote titles of odes, and then switched papers with another classmate, who then wrote the actual ode!

” Odes allow poets to pay tribute to people, places, things, or ideas, elevating them through elevated language and imagery”-Poetry Foundation

Lo Que Me Hace Sentir Mi perra Cuando Estoy Aburrido by Reyner P.

Siempre es ruidosa

Cuando quiere salir

A jugar y correr

Siempre duerme

Cuando se cansa

Siempre quiere salir

A jugar y correr

Nunca se cansa

Siempre salta

Y corre por todos

Lados

Ella es divertida

Cuando yo estoy

Aburrido

Pero ella siempre va estar para quitarme el aburrimiento cuando esté aburrido.

What My Dog Makes Me Feel When I’m Bored

She is always noisy
When she wants to go out
To play and run
She always sleeps
When she gets tired
She always wants to go out
To play and run
She never gets tired
She always jumps
And runs everywhere
She is fun
When I am
Bored
But she will always be there to take away my boredom when I am bored.

Ode to my Friends by Olivia A.

My friends can help me

solve things I can’t

They can also

comfort me when

I’m sad/angry

I can always rely

 on my real friends

And keep them till

We live in different places

I can call them when I need help or

I’m bored, they can

Buy me something,

Then I can pay them back

Ode to my Family by Cole C.

My family is very important to me

I love them very much

They are near and dear to my heart

They have been my day 1s

I love them more than anything

I would do anything for them.

Ode to Summer by Lola Mendez

Summer time

Warm and bright

What a joy

It wakes up in the morning

 go to sleep tonight

 Dark

 and then bright

 Repeats And repeats

 When daytime appears

It’s warm and sends you

with me, but the time to go to bed

 Good night, the warmth goes

Bright turns into night

Goodnight

Ode to my Soccer Cleats by Hilary V.M.

My soccer cleats have gone through everything

Torn,

Sweaty,

And muddy.

I try my best to do an around-the-world

Again, Again, and again.

Finally, I got it right this time.

After 67 times, I finally got it!

A pain hits my body.

My soccer cleats are worth more than anything else.

Helps, focus, and determination.

Ode to my Dog by Nathan M.

My dog

Wanting to play

All day

Licking

And letting me

Pet her

She is

Friendly

Playful

Smart

And Calm

Always exited

When friends come over

Wanting to also play

With them

Lastly

At the end

Of the day

As I

Go to bed

She jumps up

Into the bed

On the covers

Sleeping

On my legs

Sleeping…

Waiting…

To do it all

Over again

The next day

An Ode to Friends by Niko W.

Friends are great

Summers at the lake

Winters at the park

Friends are like a ladder; they lift you up

An ode to friends making amends

Whipped cream pies and blue dyes

Playing soccer

Playing mimes getting dimes

Watching movies

Playing tag

An ode to friends making trends

TikTok and YouTube, good riddance

Friends ending 67

Friends run the street with their feet

friends lift you up

friends are fun

Without friends, you aren’t whole
