Intro to Spoken Word: My Voice, My Story

For the 7th session at Legal Prep, both Ms. Schiffer’s freshmen classes and Ms. Wysinger’s seniors incorporated imagery and repetition in their poems and practice reading them out loud as an introduction to spoken word. Snap it up for this week’s poets!

Ms. Schiffer - 4th Period, Freshman Class

Hear Me Now K'Quavton

Hear me now. I am more than what people assume.

I’ve been quiet, but I have a voice.

Through struggle, I found strength.

Hear me now.

My story has power.

Hear me now.

Ms. Wysinger - 6th Period, Senior Class

I am still here Caliyah

I carry more than what they see.

Names, looks, whispers that tried to define me.

Hallways echo louder than the truth most times but I keep walking anyways.

I am still here surviving

They talk like they know my story, my life like they know everything I do

as if they living it, not to understand me.

But to bring me down but

I am still here surviving.

There were days I questioned everything, my worth, my voice, my place

Like when silent days felt safer than speaking

Like something in me wanted to disappear but yet

I am still here surviving.

I may not be perfect but I’m real, growing, learning, strong in ways nobody sees

Nobody claps for the healing process

But God

So that’s why

I am still here surviving.
