“I am a force, a legend, an echo”

This week, Hyde Park’s poets discussed big egos and big statements. Using Nikki Giovanni’s poem “Ego Tripping,” we explored the power of hyperbole and what it means to overcome and bet on yourself. These poems are out of this world, with themes of strength, inheritance, and embodying the natural world’s power.

A Titan Among Mortals by Tai'Shaun A.

I strive through the world artistic and
bold with colors so vivid my story is
told. Ambition ignites like a wildfire
grand, mountains bow down at the
wave of my hand.
I am a force, a legend, an echo
of time forever ascending in rhythm
and rhyme.

My Name by Davion D.

mother of mine, why did I get this
name of mine?

Atomic by Oluwafeyiseke A.

I am great at what
I do kicking a ball from earth
to the moon is a small feat
friends and family might be at
the top but my number one is
me my goals are like blowing
the sun out creating a cold
war
I exert so much aura even the
predators bow down to me I reflect
an image of my dad who is even
greater than me with one wave
of his hand he clears out
all evils that come his
way and stands tall no matter the
challenges

"My Identity" by Bernard T.

This is my Identity
Nobody is a friend of me
Darkness in my vicinity
Remedy behind closed doors
Being nice is just killing me
What’s getting into me?
What’s getting into me?
Dark souls
Outside of me is bright
But inside of me is the same color as charcoal
This dark hole
I’m in is so dark
I hope some lighting can spark
Cause you can’t find me like I’m with polo and macro
Repeat my name
I might just change my demeanor
This the man I became
I bet my presence will linger
I leave things on a good note
Professional singer
I can be cocky at times
You think you nice but I’m cleaner
My image printed on my body like my last name khalifa
I’d rather focus on myself I don’t need a diva
If you show me no respect I might get hot like fever
But I’m warm-hearted, nice
Like a golden retriever
