How to train your dream beast

For their 5th session of poetry, Twain 5th graders explored the dream world. I asked students: why are dreams important and how can we protect our dreams? We discussed how we can have dreams about the future, nightmares that scare us, daydreaming when were bored, and dreams that make us smile. Dreams help us be creative and expand our imaginations.

Together we listened to a recording of Mark Bird reading his poem, “Dreambeast.” In his poem Bird imagines a beast that represents the dreams that are deep inside us waiting to come out. Train it with care and boost its esteem/spotlight it brightly so it can be seen. Bird also tells readers that we have to take care of our dreams and protect them from naysayers. So feed it with strength/believe that’s its real/nurture with love/ and trust how it feels.

Inspired by Mark Bird, 5th graders wrote poems imagining their own dream beasts. Please enjoy the artwork and poems below.
