Group Poems!

Going on week 7 with 7th graders at Nettelhorst, we explored group poetry! We watched and read the poem by Chucky Black and Victoria C. titled “Learning Love.” Students were then tasked with the challenge to write a group poem with a classmate (or two!) about the things they had in common. Check out this weeks poems from Nettelhorst 7th graders!

Mrs. Hempe 7th Grade Group 1

"Chicago and Spain" David P. and Zander C.

Born in Chicago, still here today.

Looking at the blue skies
on summer days.

Born in Spain where it
never snows,

eating paella while the
light glows.

Back in Chicago, making pasta

While watching a show
when the lights glow.

Back in Spain, when the
beach is calm, but here
in Chicago is full of
concrete.

"Summer Fun" Alex C. and Mrs. Hempe

What will summer be for me?
Summer will be waterslides, vacation, and adventure.

What will summer be for me?
Summer will be the sun, the pool, dog walks, and rest.

Summer is an ice cube that will soon
melt away.

So take the time to travel far away,
enjoy every moment and don’t waste a day.

"Similar but Different" Chloe K. and Annie K.

Born and raised in Chicago
12 years ago Lakeview would be my
future home.
Our lives so far apart, would be so
close together.
Second grade, our story started…
our similarities grew like leaves on
the trees.
Fresh sushi filled with tempura is
how we bond

We are so similar.

"Similarities and Differences" Owen M. and Taonga Z.

Supporting opposing rivals on
a field with determined players,
having a loved one
to take care of until
they’re able to.
Playing side by side on the
same team for the same purpose,
he likes strange things, but I like
things that happen in a flash.

"There for you" Abbey P. and Arnav S.

Sometimes friendship is all that
matters even when all you want to
do is sleep you’re always there for
them

the late nights playing uno together
because it is the small moments
that really matter

even in the simplest moments
when you’re eating sushi because
sometimes that’s when we feel the
most open

because your friend will
always be there for you even
in the toughest of times.

Mrs. Hempe 7th Grade Group 2

"New Beginnings but Same Endings" Vianne N. and Chloe B.

Wake up, go to school, come home, sleep.
Repeat.
Each day is the same.
Nothing new until
You.

I was sad.
So were you.

When we realized we could get
through it together, we would be
best friends forever.
Everything together
But both still never better.

New beginnings but same endings,

We will get through it together.

"Favorites" Henry W. and Alessandra C.

Our favorites are the same
favorite snacks are
Spicy Takis
and chips
and cavier and
granola bars,
we both eat them and love them
they are so delicious

Although we have different animals
that we like, they still both are
reptiles.
Komodo dragons and chameleons.

"Book-etry" Beckett R. and Isaac B.

Literature for all
Enjoyment like that of a slide.
Messages are forms of static
Their purchase that resonates the loss of money,
but not of action.

Anytime, anywhere, be a story.

Only scourge or blight to be seen is a gathering
of sorts, club of books, one that turns the
whimsy to discussion equal to wet concrete.

Books to poetry is akin to museums to arts.

They could all vilify my opinions if they
wish, but in my mind each book is
one of a kind, the kind to have free
interpretation.

The interpretation that books can be poetry.

Book-etry!

"Swirl of Colors" Emma B. and Sofia HN

Friendship is like a
swirl of colors.

Pink is singing and
playing volleyball.

Blue
is family and sports.

Violet is Chicago,
The play we were raised.
Violet is volleyball
everyday.
