Giving someone advice is so very nice

For their 8th week of poetry Twain 5th graders discovered what it means to give bad advice. Advice is a suggestion or a hint that is given to someone in order to help and guide them. We talked about good advice vs. bad advice. Good advice is telling someone that if they study had they can get good grades. While bad advice is pinching your little, you can get in trouble with your parents, or they can pinch you right back.

Together we read the poem “Advice to Rapunzel,” by Eileen Spinelli. In her poem Spinelli repetition and couplets, pairs of rhyming words to offer advice to the fairy tale character Rapunzel. Who is this Prince Charming who claims to be true?/Who claims to be caring for nothing put you?/Be sure you’re not blinded by his crown/before you go letting your hair down. Spinellie wants Rapunzel to be cautious and wise, by not letting strangers climb up her hair.

Inspired by Spinelli students wrote their own poems, giving some great and often silly advice.

Advice to Weirdcore by Leslie O.

Weirdcore your full of life
but you’re left alone day and night.

Instead of staring at a shiny moon
or going outside singing a small tune.

You’re under a spell of speaking
only kindness by a witch, living
your life like a meaningless glitch,
glitch, glitch.

Try to run to the sky.
Up above, so you may finally relax.

You again want to sing a little tune,
up in the sky to the moon.

If only given you this advice sooner.
You are right now battling
for others lives and are getting gloomier.

You may have broken the spell.
But nothing seems to ring a bell.
