Fun with Similes

During our third session of summer poetry camp at Mark Twain we explored similes in the poem “Friends” by Abbie Farwell Brown and in the song, “As” by Stevie Wonder. The student poets read and listened to these examples and then were able to apply similes to their own work. Take a look at these lovely four poems from Ms. Carther’s 3rd – 5th graders!

My Life Arely

My life is like an endless globe spinning over and over.

My mom is like a funny, cooking mom who makes yummy food.

Ezra is like a book full of excitement and surprises.

My sister is like a wanting, sassy girl but my friend.

My brother is a spinning tornado who pretends he’s sonic.

Huskies are my favorite dog like it jumps and is as soft as a cloud.

A ferret is like a stretchy rope being pulled and getting longer.

My life is my life with excitement.

I love my life and it will be my life forever and ever and ever.

I am living in a fairytale.

Alan Why I Like School

A clock is like a warm pumpkin pie.

A ruler is as long as a sweet churro.

A pencil is like a small, little broom.

That is why I like school.

Eli Penguin Poem

A Sunday out in Penguin Town

The town is like ship work nonstop.

There are houses for the penguin to eat, drink and sleep.

The penguin likes to sleep like a bear.

They have a mall for the penguins.

They shop like a human.

We chill with us.

We use to fly but we cannot like the birds from the US eat fries.

We  can slide on our bellies like going on the slide at the water park.

We have a defense like a sword and a shield.

My Best Friend Ezra

My friend’s a laughing monkey disturbing other animals in the zoo.

My friend is a paper squishy making machine.

My friend is nice like my mom cheering me up.

Me and my friend, after we perform folkorico, we always have to ask our parents if we can get Burger King.

And it is all the time.

She is the bestest friend in the whole, entire world and galaxy.

I am so lucky that she is my friend.

She is always making me laugh and when people see us in the hallway, people say,

“Here comes the best friends!”

She is an adventure full of happiness.

She is like a beautiful sunset.
