Odes are poems that celebrate and show appreciation for someone or some thing. After reading the poem, “Ode to My Lizard,” we talked about celebrating things and people that we often take for granted, such as teachers, chairs, hands, ears, and places where we were born.

let me celebrate
Ms. Pendola.
her eyes are as hazel as
walnuts
her style is as
beautiful as spring
her hair is as
brown as bark
from a tree.
Mr. Ciccone 3rd Grade
My legs help me walk
like the fastest walker in the world of walkers
My legs help me run and sit in a chair
which feels
like a car seat.
My legs help me squat
like I am crouching hard.
My legs help me kick
like I’m in marshal arts
they help me balance
like kung fu panda
My legs help me jump
like a basketball player
My legs help me move
like I am the controller of legs.
Ms. Brist 2nd Grade
the wiggliness of jello
is inside of me
the smartness of google
is inside of me
the electricity of a power line
is inside of me
the speed of a rabbit
is inside of me
the curiosity of a scientist
is inside of me
the braveness of a warrior
is inside of me
the fierceness of a wolf
is inside of me
What is inside of me
is oxygen because oxygen is around
me
The bird singing makes
a special day for me
and feels like spring
I am like winter because
fresh and coldness is like
me
What is inside me is
poetry because poetry
is like magic
Inside of me is a sharp cactus
like telling you to go away
Inside of me is a llama
like telling you I am okay with you here
Inside of me is snow telling you
I can be fun but don’t annoy me
Inside of me is heavy boulders
like sharp, heavy bones
Inside of me is a octopus like a brain
la alegria está en mí
cuando juego con
los leones está en mí
porque me hace sentir
como un rey
está en mí
Ms. Liz 2nd Grade
I feel grateful to my car
she takes me places
she has been through a lot
I feel proud of my car
for making it through so much
the rough Chicago
streets
with potholes like
dangerous pools and muddy ditches
in the cold winters
my car keeps me
warm
My car has taped
boo boos
worn like band aids
I am thankful for all of our memories
