Cover Your Ears

We all have sounds we adore and sounds that make us cringe. The 7th and 8th graders of Waters asked themselves what these sounds were for them before we read “Sweet Like a Crow” by Michael Ondaatje. After exploring what similes were, students then created their own to describe their favorite and least favorite sounds. From funny to heartfelt to silly to honest, students reflected on the sounds of their friends, school, siblings, sports, parents and more.

Ms. Hernandez (7th Grade)

Unforgettable Dylan L.

The swish of the net

Like finally accomplishing that 1 goal

The goalie dives like a dumb mannequin

The feeling as if you’re on top of the world

Running to the corner to celebrate like Messi

Defense so shocked it was like they got electrocuted.

But why is that so hd to accomplish?

Like attempting to beat an unbeatable video game

The swish just like a basketball hoop swish

Like levitating up to heaven

Like getting published on CPC

Like an unforgettable sound

My Sister Amneh S.

Annoying like a blender blending ice

Sounds ugly like a naked mole rat

Sounds funny like a cocomelon computer

She sounds like a mentally ill

man

She sounds like a pig getting held

up by the neck

She sounds like a police car

siren at 3am.

Matteo's Voice Cy C.

Matteo’s voice, I hear it everyday.

It cheers me up when I’m sad.

Matteo’s voice, it is like a song

with yelling and screaming.

Matteo’s voice, it is like a swish

from a basketball hoop.

Matteo’s voice, it is as loud as a

car engine.

Matteo’s voice, it is as funny as a

comedy show.

Matteo’s voice, it is as random as

a slot machine.

Matteo’s Voice.

Ms. Hernandez (8th Grade)

Like a Mouse Trying to Roar Sam S.

Your voice is annoying as a cow in the desert.

Like a tiger in the ocean.

As big as a rat.

Like a restaurant closed during rush hour.

Like an astronaut without a space suit.

Your voice is annoying like a mouse trying to roar.

School Reeve S.

After school I am

happy like

a rainbow

A math test is

annoying like

an elementary recess

Getting a 100 on a test is as

peaceful as

a butterfly flying on a sunny day

Finishing your homework the day you get it is

as relieving as

seeing the bright sun after a dark storm

The school lunchroom is as

loud as

a storm on a sunny day

My Dad Nathan G.

My dad saying “We need to talk.” is as scary as PTSD.

It is as freaky as a random embarrassing memory.

It is as hard to hear as a ringtone.

It is as interrupting as a morning alarm.

It is as unwanted as a mistake.

It is as saddening as an F on an easy assignment.
