‘Calmness is the silence in the waiting room’: Metaphor Poems

Students worked on crafting metaphors after reading poems using this poetic device, including ‘Dreams’ by Langston Hughes and ‘Metaphors’ by Sylvia Plath.

Dreams

by Langston Hughes

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die

Life is a broken-winged bird

That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams

For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

“Metaphors can spark new associations and understandings, putting an issue in a new light and prompting people to rethink their opinions or assumptions. When we need to shift widely shared mindsets, the right metaphor can make the difference”-Tapping Into the Power of Metaphors in Thought Pieces, 2020.

Emotions By Charlotte G.

Joy is a party that never stops

Sadness is a flower that never blooms

Anger is a fire that never burns out

Calmness is the silence in the waiting room

Downsides of Emotions by Gavin U.

Anger

is a fire that never stops burning.

Sadness

Is a pipe that never stops pouring water.

Happiness

Is a smile that soon tortures.

Disgust

Is a feeling of endless throwup coming up and out.

Fear

Is endless terror.

Droopy Raincloud William S.

I am a droopy raincloud

Raining tears of depression

With no one to comfort me

I flood the village with tears

Feelings Galore by Augie K.

Life in our world is a field of flowers

Waiting for the weather to change.

We wait for a glowing sun to come

When the sky changes to grey.

We wait for the rain to come

When the crops are starting to wither.

But we aren’t talking about nature.

We are talking about the feeling of boiling water

Waiting inside of us.

To simmer and cool down

Or to overflow and leak out.

We wait. And wait. And wait.

But then the sun comes out.

The rain clears. But it stays close by.

But just for a few moments

Life is joy

Life is a cool summer day that is spent with family and friends

No economics or politics

Just love and joy

And a cool summer day with sun and sea

The Cycle by Loretta J.

Depression is like a dark room that never seems to end.

Feels like no one is your friend.

You feel a cloud over your head that won´t go.

You are in a prison, but no one knows.

The world is cold, and your shoulders are on the floor.

Your mind has an endless amount of chores.

But you start to see a light.

Every day it gets a little closer.

And you are finally there.

You feel happy again,

Joy is a bright sunny day that never ends.

Feels like everyone is your friend.

The cloud that was on your head is still there, but now it has a rainbow and still won´t go.

Your are in a wonderland but no one knows.

You are glowing, from the inside out.

There may be a time when you feel you are in prison,

But in time, you will feel like you have risen.

Emotions Matthew G.

Anger is a volcano

When the lava bursts out

Sadness is the Spring rain

Constantly falling down

Fear is what’s not seen

In a dark room

Joy is after Winter

When the flowers bloom

Confusion is seeing things

Unable to be seen

Like a tree fighting a bush

Or an elephant on a trampoline

Mrs. McClain, 8th Grade Group Three

Emotions by Daniel G.

Anger is a red-hot fire that burns more when poked

Sadness is a blue rainy rain that dissipates

Confusion is like a maze that you can’t get out of

But happiness is a source that glows as the more you play

When something is ruined, distraught might appear

It will get worse the more you ruin it

So yeah

Emotion by Julia C.

Sadness is a breakup on text that didn’t work from the start,

is the Sunday rain knowing Monday is coming

Anger is the school furnace, getting hotter and hotter each day
Happiness is the ice cream that drips down your hands in the summer

is the fresh fruit and hot air for three wonderful months

And emotion is the ups and downs of life, a world that always goes round and round

The chocolates always left in the box, the glass half empty or half full
